Andreas Reuter, parallel to his assignment as a Scientific and Managing Director of the EML Research gGmbH is the Scientific and Managing Director of our sister organisation, the European Media Laboratory GmbH. In addition to these two posts, he holds the endowed chair (supported by Klaus Tschira Foundation) "Dependable Systems" at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern.

His research background is in databases, transaction processing, distributed systems, and parallel processing. His main contribution in this field is the textbook "Transaction Processing - Concepts and Techniques" that he published jointly with Jim Gray in 1992. This book has become a standard reference for researchers and developers world-wide and has been translated into Chinese and Japanese.

In addition to his research, he conducted numerous consulting projects and lectured extensively on various subjects in academia and industry. He serves on various Technical Advisory Boards in industry and research organisations. 

He has been elected as an External Scientific Member of the Max-Planck-Institute for Computer Science (MPII) at Saarbrücken. 

In addition, he was or is member of a number of program committees and editorial boards. 

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

He started his career as an independent consultant for designing and implementing database applications. In 1981 he received his Ph.D. from Technical University of Darmstadt and subsequently became an Assistant Professor at Kaiserslautern University. In 1983 and 1984 he was a visiting scientist at the IBM Research Lab, San Jose, CA. From 1985 to 1997 he was a Full Professor at Stuttgart University, heading the research group "Applications of Parallel and Ditributed Systems". In 1989 he founded the Institute of Parallel and Distributed High Performance Systems at Stuttgart University. From 1989 to 1991 he was Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science at Stuttgart University. From 1992 he served as a Vice-President of Stuttgart University. In 1997 he participated in the initiative to establish a private university in Germany with a focus on Information Technology which eventually became the International University in Germany at Bruchsal. From 1998 to 2001 he was the Dean of the School of Information Technology at that university, from 2001 to 2004 he was Vice President of Academic Affairs.

PERSONAL INTERESTS

First, there is a passion for reading – mostly literature from the pre-electronic ages. Second, there are his futile attempts at playing the piano. Then there is an old enthusiasm for jogging, which during the years mellowed into a predilection for hiking. And finally there is his obsession with islands, which not very often finds an occasion to express itself.
