EML Research School

In 2007 EML Research took a major step towards implementing collaboration with the University of Heidelberg at the institutional level.
After detailed discussions, a formal contract was signed on July 26 by the Rector of the University of Heidelberg, Prof. Peter Hommelhoff, the University CAO , Dr. Marina Frost, Klaus Tschira, and Andreas Reuter.

The contract defines a number of different kinds of collaboration, the most important of which are the following:

  • Joint PhD programmes that are part of the University’s Graduate Schools. Both the University and EML Research will contribute to financing and running the research and teaching activities related to these PhD programmes.
  • Senior scientists (group leaders) can be granted the right to supervise PhD theses by the respective Faculty, conditional on a number of formal requirements.
  • Researchers from EML Research will contribute to the teaching offerings of the university.
  • The University and EML Research will jointly define and finance visiting scientist programmes. The visitors will be offered the chance to participate in the activities of the Marsilius-Kolleg (Marsilius Center of Advanced Research).
  • The University and EML Research will jointly appoint professors in the areas of their collaboration. Those professors can have shared appointments between the two institutions, or they can be on the payroll of one of them while collaborating with the other, These arrangements may change over time. There are different formal frameworks for making such joint appointments, and the decision about which one to use will depend on the specific situation.
Both sides have entered into the agreement with the clear expectation of strengthening their respective research and teaching portfolio by strategically combining it with the resources of the other partner. Through the intended collaboration, research in areas such as systems biology, computational linguistics, etc. can be placed on a broader footing than either partner alone could afford. The same holds for visiting Faculty programs and the offerings of the various Graduate Schools.
EML Research is excited about the prospect of collaborating with such an excellent partner in all fields on our research agenda.
