Opening for a postdoctoral research associate in the Molecular and Cellular Modeling group at EML Research in Heidelberg, Germany
We are seeking a highly motivated person to join the Molecular and Cellular Modeling group at EML Research as a postdoctoral research associate as soon as possible. The research will involve the development and application of methods to harness protein structural information for the SYSMOLAB project. SYSMOLAB is an international project involving eight laboratories in three countries and is focused on the comparative systems biology of lactic acid bacteria. This project is part of the SYSMO European transnational funding and research initiative on the "Systems Biology of Microorganisms" (http://www.sysmo.net).
EML Research gGmbH is a private non-profit research laboratory dedicated to basic and applied research in IT, with a strong emphasis on bioinformatics. The Molecular and Cellular Modeling group is an interdisciplinary research group that works on the development and application of computer-aided methods to predict and simulate biomolecular interactions. The focus is on proteins and the computational approaches are mostly based on the three-dimensional structures of macromolecules. Techniques cover a wide spectrum from interactive, web-based visualization tools to molecular and Brownian dynamics simulations (see http://www.eml-research.de; http://projects.villa-bosch.de/mcm). Candidates should possess a Ph.D. or equivalent qualification. Candidates should preferably have experience in protein modelling and excellent computing skills, as well as a strong interest in interdisciplinary work.

Two Scholarships available in the Natural Language Processing Group at EML Research in Heidelberg, Germany (Reference No. 3_2007NLP)
Two scholarships (EUR 15.360/year, tax free) are available in the NLP group at EML Research starting January 1st, 2008, or as soon as possible thereafter. The possibility of pursuing a PhD can be arranged in cooperation with the University of Heidelberg - assuming that all formal requirements are fulfilled.
The successful candidates will be working in projects dealing with mining and creating lexical semantic resources and their use in NLP tasks such as coreference resolution, relation extraction, and applications such as question answering, automatic summarization, information extraction, textual entailment (see the website listed above for our previous research on those topics).
Candidates should have a strong background in computational linguistics and possess a Masters or a Diploma degree in either computational linguistics, computer science or linguistics. Experience with machine learning and corpus-based methods and knowledge about statistics is a plus. Strong Java programming skills are required. The scholarships will be granted initially for two years with the possibility for a one year extension after successful evaluation.
